Immigration issues

Immigration issues hit close to him for me. My dad is an immigrant. He came to the U.S. over 30 years ago. In this presidential election, immigration is an important issue. Immigrants account for a good portion of our population. In a CNN poll, it stated that out of a sample of 601 Latinos they felt that Obama would handle immigration better than Mitt Romney.

President Obama’s immigration reform has caused him to gain some criticism from both parties.President Obama’s stand is giving those under 30 who may have made it through high school or earned an equivalent education and those who served in the military a path to citizenship.

Romney differs in opinion as he states that his main goal would be to build a fence on the borders as well as give people who served in the military and children who came at “no fault to them” a path to citizenship. Romney argued that Obama’s late response to immigration reform is “politically driven” because it just got attention this past summer.

I would have to agree with Romney on the fact that it should have received more attention during the first term of President Obama. However, I do believe there is a lot of corruption and under hand dealing that goes on at the border. Putting an improved border may not stop illegal immigration. I think they need to talk more with Mexico and come up with better ways to handle the border issue. What do you think?

Tweet for a Week!

I am not a newbie when it comes to Twitter. I have had my Twitter page for at least two years now and have over 15,000 tweets. When I first read my class Twitter assignment I didn’t know if I should feel nervous or excited. For one, Twitter can become really redundant and it takes a lot of creativity and personality to make your page shine.Being followed and following people in my class was scary. What kind of things could I tweet that will catch an interest for them? Are they informal? Will they be as interactive as I want them to be? These are all questions that I thought about prior t the assignment.

Once the week got under way I found out that I had nothing to worry about. If there’s one common interest that we all shared it was our grade. Having this as an assignment for class left us with no choice but to participate in online conversation. The week turned out to be very informative. It was nice seeing conversations that pertained to my future. Also in this assignment it taught me that Twitter is more than sharing my personal thoughts. I looked at more interesting news articles this week  than I have ever done before.

I plan on continuing to follow the people in my class. More than likely they will be or has already been in a similar class with me, so they can serve as a resource. Also, it is a good networking tool. Some of the retweets from my classmates made me look into other people profiles that I may have never known about. In PR, networking is key and I plan on doing much more through my Twitter page.

This assignment also taught me how maintaining a clean page is beneficial. You don’t ever want someone to look at your page and dismiss you because of the content. I have always watched what I tweet or retweet. I never know when someone who wants to work with me is looking at my profile. All in all, it was a good week. I ended up tweeting more than we had to because I focused on being more sociable and interactive.

Thanks for reading! Good luck on finals as well!

He won’t forget it!”

Jolly Good Vacay

This post is about the time I vacationed in London, England. I have an aunt that lives in London that occasionally visited my dad and I in the states. One summer, when I was around 13, I convinced my dad to take me overseas.

I soon learned this would be the LONGEST flight of my life! I was not used to traveling places that I could fall asleep and wake up and still not be there. From the moment we landed, I had the time of my life. Being in a place with so much history all around you was amazing.

What really made this my favorite vacay spot was recognizing the many differences between London and the U.S. From pulling a rope to flush the toilet, the two level McDonald’s, to watching my aunt drive on the right side of a car. Visiting the palace was fun experience as well.I couldn’t get the guards to move an inch to save my life!

I do want to go back some time soon. Even though it is the same place, I feel it will be a totally different experience because I am older now. I can observe and recognize things that I wouldn’t have at 13. So for now, I am hinting to my parents about a European trip for graduation. We shall see!

Thanks for reading!

After reading ” Week 3 Being fined for texting and walking”  by kb03249 I wrote:

“I agree with what you’re saying. People should take responsibility for their own actions. What could be so interesting that you can completely drown out your surroundings and walk right into a fountain? Not too many things. It could be somewhat enforced at cross walks but I personally have never seen someone idly walk across the street texting the entire time anyway, not even once. So I think these people should just wise up and be more aware or walking into something will be the least of their worries.”

After reading “Texting while Walking Topic of the Week 3” by riddledwithpotholes I wrote:

“I agree that there other ways to bring awareness to the issue without banning it. Banning it would infuriate anyone because it takes away personal rights. What kind of person would actually walk into a lake? It’s those kind of people who the campaign that you suggested would be best for. I couldn’t imagine not being able to use my phone while I’m walking.

After reading “Topic of the week texting and walking” by Meerkitta I wrote:
“I absolutely agree! How could they even prove that a person was texting? And what if there are 10 people at an intersection and 7 were of then were texting fining ALL of them would be hard.Additionally, its a MOBILE PHONE meaning I can use it whenever and where ever my heart(amd fingers)desires. It is a case of common sense but the problem is that it’s not as common as it should be.”

After reading “Topic of the week-July 9” by ggonzalez33 I wrote:
“Overkill is definitely what fining would be. The resources used to implement such violations would be unneccessary.I agree there are other ways to get the public aware without punishing the whole population. BTW, love the commercial!”

Watch out for that..fountain?

Tarzan ran into trees, but who would ever think someone could walk into something like a fountain? Or even a lake? . I am talking about all the people who get so caught up with their phones while walking that they end up either tripping, running into something ( or some one), or getting seriously hurt. This is a problem that is gaining more and more attention in the news. Everyone should be aware of the “No Texting and Driving” campaign by now but who would’ve thought that texting while walking would ever become a problem? I’m pretty sure no one did. The fact is that incidents are happening while people are texting while walking.
After reading the article on USA today (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012-05-15/texting-while-walking-illegal/54979480/1) I can admit that I have been distracted while texting and walking but I have never been a victim of a major incident ( knocks on wood). I find it incredibly STUPID, for lack of a better term, to be so unaware of your surroundings. To fall into a fountain or lake may generate laughs but how could you begin to explain HOW that happened?
When it comes to preventing accidents I believe there should be a campaign instead of fines. The major problem with fines is figuring out who is going to enforce them. Of course it’s the police job but with all the other crimes being committed how many officers are actually going to stop a person for texting? Another problem is how would you know that the person was texting? With smartphones there are so many interactive apps that may make you look like you are texting, but you’re really not. Being able to prove someone was texting instead of checking email, looking for a number, or simply playing a game will be difficult and very time consuming.
I like how Delaware is handling the problem by putting “Look Up” signs everywhere. First off, it would human instinct to such follow directions.Once that attention is broken from the phone the person is immediately aware of their surroundings. I believe campaigns such as these are beneficial in that it brings awareness to a problem without using extra resources such as police officers.

What I had to say about my peer’s blogs (PRCA 3030)

After reading “Dealing with People” by twentyoneandup I wrote:

“Wow I have dealt with co-workers like those and I am sorry you
re going through it now! Those two definitely don’t seem like they possess the trait of patience. In due time you get what you deserve. Working hard can speed the process up but no responsibility should be taken on without being fully prepared. Hang in there you seem like you have a good formula of dealing with them.Good job”

After reading “Dealing with people you can’t stand” by ndemarko I wrote:

“I definitely agree with learning someone’s background. Knowing that can help you figure out just what type of person you’re dealing with and could lessen the burden of dealing with conflict. I also used “seeing his perspective” in my blog as well. It is important to put our ego and pride to the side when working with others. Our way or their way may not be the best way. Great post, very organized!”

My views about some of my peer’s blog

After reading “The Difficulty With Difficult People” by brittanyforrester I wrote:

“I definitely feel as if we are in an industry of stubborn, strong-minded, difficult people. But I believe there is always a motive. Are they acting in that way because their company is their “baby” and they take everything seriously? Or is somebody trying to change a way of doing something but they have been taught and trained to do it differently? I agree that knowing someone’s background is helpful and can give you insight on their actions. Great post!”

After reading “Blog 2” by allie3791 I wrote:

“I love this post. You sound like a very understanding and caring person. Sometimes we forget that our own actions may trigger a negative reactions from others. Looking at how we contribute to the conflict is important in reaching a “happy” median. Also I like the suggestion of looking at their family. Their traditions, beliefs, and surroundings, all play a part in their personality. Looking for insight always helps. Great job!”
